The shifting sands of meaning

I have already commented on Glen Eira Clowncil’s upcoming ‘consultation’ process regarding the Community Plan. It has previously gone under all the following misnomers - ‘consultation’; ‘forum’; ‘workshop’. Now we have the latest version as per clowncil’s media release. Please note that it is no longer ‘consultation’; no longer a ‘forum’ or a ‘workshop’. What we have now is simply a ‘meeting’ with the promise that us poor residents will have ‘the opportunity to discuss local issues’. I wonder what clowncil’s definition of ‘discussion’ and ‘meeting’ is?

Here’s the latest version of their spin doctoring -

Community meetings commence next week

To assist in the development of the 2008–2012 Glen Eira Community Plan, residents are invited to attend a community meeting in their area. Commencing next week, the meetings will not only allow residents to have input into the Plan, but the opportunity to discuss local issues.

Mayor of Glen Eira Cr Steven Tang said the two hour meetings will allow Council to gain an understanding of local priorities and how satisfied members of the community are living in Glen Eira.

“Council will also be able to hear suggestions from the community on how to make the municipality a better place to live in the future,” Cr Tang said.

The proposed Plan is expected to be released for public comment in April. Meetings will be held from 7pm–9pm at the following locations:

Six and final meeting is tonight at Carnegie Library. I hope someone keeps a record of what is actually discussed by the residents themselves.
