And the Stuff-ups Continue

After allocating $2.94 million for a ‘refurbishment’ of Centre Road, Bentleigh, and Glen Eira Clowncil’s continued claim that the current footpaths were ‘unsafe’, we now have the situation where the new arrangements present an even greater danger to pedestrians. I quote a Letter To The Editor (Leader, January 16th) -

“Would the idiot who decided to construct dividing strips at the intersections of Robert and Mitchell streets with Centre Rd, please stand up? We’ve just watched the second person trip and fall heavily at the intersection of Mitchell St. As well, a friend fell, a couple of weeks ago at exactly the same spot and needed hospital treatment. How many more people have fallen there?

If the intention was to slow the traffic entering and leaving these streets, it will certainly do that - as it makes navigation quite awkward and impossible for larger behicles without driving over the barricades.

We were please to see the end of the cobble stones here, but the present obstaceles are even more dangerous. Glen Eira Council - please remove at your earliest convenience’.

(Wendy and Kevin Hosking, Bentleigh)

As to ‘idiots’ I’d also like to know who was responsible for the planting of trees at street corners so that pedestrian and motorists vision is totally impaired as they are about to turn right or left into main streets, or move out of angle parking at Packer Park? This design is certainly worth 2.94 million isn’t it? Congratulations to the architect/landscape designer for these continued and expensive ’stuff-ups’!!!

Seems like the ’stuff-ups’ are really continuing. In this week’s Moorabbin Glen Eira Leader there is also a letter from Amanda Worthington chastising Glen Eira for failing to acknowledge the ‘traditional owners of the land’ at the last Mayoral Civic Dinner - something which has been done in the past, which countless other councils do, and which protocol, if not common courtesy would also demand. It seems that not only did Glen Eira fail to include this on the occasion but NOT ONE COUNCILLOR REPLIED TO Amanda’s letter sent in october. Yet, Cr. Tang would like us to believe that councillors are ‘diligent’ and hardworking - that they really take account of what the community feels. Answering a letter and offering an apology for what is possible an oversight does not appear too much too ask. But I forget - that this is a council which NEVER apologises for its ’stuff-ups’, and doesn’t seem to care!

I want a job escorting people across the street while work continues in Bentleigh. What an absolute waste of rate payers dollars this exercise is! For goodness sake, if you’re fit enough to navigate the surrounding streets in suburbia Glen Eira, anyone can handle the roadworks being undertaken in earnest now. A passing pedestrian would always assist a pram or chair user if really necessary but to employ three people I saw….ohh!
