Glen Eira’s abject capitulation over the ‘kids in the park’ fiasco and their latest homepage call for ‘fair go for all’ cannot camouflage the simple fact that once you mix media, kids, and powerful luminaries such as Brumby, Ian Thorpe, Dawn Fraser, Andrew Gaze, etc., the writing was always on the wall that these puppets and their masters would simply cave in. Yet questions still need to be asked. For instance: what happened to the ’schleppers’ and their footy escapades earlier this year? Did they pay the $5,000 in fines? If so will this now be refunded? Pity they weren’t cute 8 year olds and the herald sun/Neil Mitchell didn’t choose to take up their cause!

Feldman and his script writers, urge all people to enjoy parks. Feldman is cited as writing: “I want to make it crystal clear that the public have full access to our parks and gardens” I wonder what ‘full access’ means? When sporting ovals are used nearly everyday of the week in some parks, does this constitute ‘full access’ to the majority of residents who aren’t involved in sport? Does it also include all those dog walkers who pay their rates, yet are consistently losing off leash areas through relentless redevelopment? Does it include those poor buggers who decide they want to have a barbecue with a few mates and find that others who can afford to pay the $118 booking fee are given priority? Does it include all those aged ‘walkers’ and wheelchairs that council continually mentions, that are terrified to walk the paths because of hairbrained cyclists who race past at breakneck speed and who are never given warnings regarding speed limits? The bottom line is that access in Glen Eira goes to those who are willing to pay the exhorbitant premiums set by council – ie sporting clubs who take out leases and hire facilities; social gatherings that have the finances to hire ‘open space’ or book a simple barbecue for $118! The rest of us, - unsporting, ageing, and financially impaired, are left out in the cold – even though we are the majority. So much for equality and ‘full access
