Glen Eira Shenanigans

Anyone listening to Neil Mitchell this morning, or read the Herald Sun would have been amused, bemused, and annoyed at what can only be described as bureaucratic madness. Sadly, this is typical of a Council which steadfastly insists on rules and regulations that lack common sense, and which have been devised without community consultation. The latest incident concerns parents taking their kids for a run around Caulfield parks, or simply kicking a footy. According to the Glen Eira ‘thought police’, such activities are ‘organised’ events and hence require a permit - ie. revenue raising. God forbid that kids should be free to run and play wherever they want without a permit. Arguments that this is protecting the grass, is ludicrous!

For those who missed Neil Mitchell making mince meat out of Paul Burke and Margaret Esakoff, then go to the 3aw website and listen to the program. It is really entertaining!

I think it is totally crazy! What next? Having to pay and get permission just to go to the park?

How can they possibly enforce this ? Put them to the test - have the kids run around in opposite directions and insist that this is a ‘disorganised’ event.

BTW, is there an organised group of Glen Eira dissidents and malcontents or is this another case of multiple identities ?

    Dear Hannahsgranpa,

believe me there are plenty of ‘Glen Eira dissidents’ who after ten years have simply had enough of this Council and its administration. For starters, have a look at my ‘friends’- this is only a short list, but I assure you that the winds of change are starting to howl and that this will really be council’s ’summer of discontent’. All power to the people as they say.

I think I saw those kids on Thursday at Princes Park when I was driving past a bit after 5pm. They were on the soccer ground. I wonder where the ranger was? Would Council actually fine them? The you know what would definitely hit the fan if they did.

this morning of a Jewish father with his 6 kids also being told to leave a park - so it seems if you have “Costello’s third” or more you’re no longer welcome in Glen Eira’s Parks.

Meanwhile Allnutt Park is repeatedly booked out by large corporate groups who leave the park in a dreadful state. Oh yes, but they paid for a ‘permit’ for their function.

This Council has to change - how DARE they charge rate-paying residents to use their own parks. Where is the equity when many families could not afford the council charges to ‘book’ a BBQ? And what about the people who pay and don’t let anyone else have a turn of the facility? In the good old days when these things were free people politely took turns.

There is also the issue of those ridiculous toilets they are putting in at great expense - a toilet block that accomodate multiple users is replaced by a single (expensive) unit that closes itself for 10 minutes every hour, can trap children inside, and, what’s more NEED DAILY MAINTENANCE! Not only are they expensive to install, they are expensive to maintain.

    Grrrrrrrr
